This is a wonderful opportunity for interested students to speak with scientists from different disciplines and learn more about their work. If you are a scientist or if you know of someone who would like to share a lunch hour with a small group of students please contact Katerina Papaioannou (301) 229-4286 or mkpapaioannou@yahoo.com, or Celine Barker (301) 229-5818 or celine.maryland@gmail.com.

SCIENCE FAIR

The Burning Tree Science Fair will be held on WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, in the All Purpose Room (with Kindergarten exhibits displayed in the Media Center). The Science Fair is a fun, non-competitive way for students to explore the world around them. It gives them an opportunity to work on any science project or inquiry that might interest them. It provides students the opportunity to display their work at school, and share their experiences with the school community.
For ALL information (ideas, registration form, how to volunteer, to order a showboard) please download the flyer: click here.

Promote your Business, Support BT and Add Some Wild Fun to the BT Spring Fair

For the first time EVER, you can promote your business at the ever-popular Spring Fair, attended by several hundred adults and kids from BTES and the local community. You can sponsor a Rock Wall, A Giant Water Slide or a Bungee Jumper and get prominent publicity for your business through signs and brochures at the Fair and in pre-Fair announcements sent home to ALL 388 Burning Tree families. There are three sponsorship levels: $250 – Silver; $500 – Gold; and $1,000 – Platinum.
In addition to promoting your business, you will be helping to add a very fun and amazing highlight to our Spring Fair. Schools such as Wyngate and Bannockburn have had similar attractions at their schools. However, these carnival rides usually cost more than $1,000 so we have been unable to have them in the past. Since the Fill Our Pond check writing campaign replaced the Adult Fundraiser this year, your business can instead make a donation to the Spring Fair, which will help us underwrite the costs of the carnival rides. We are accepting sponsors on a first-come, first-serve basis and need to know by December 17, 2008 for planning purposes. The Spring Fair will be held on May 16, 2009 at Burning Tree E.S. Contact either Tami Chambers at tambra.chambers@comcast.net or Ellie Abramowitz at ellie.abramowitz@verizon.net if you’re interested.

JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS

Junior Great Books Have You Been Trained in Facilitating Junior Great Books Discussion Groups? Or Would You Like to Be???
Junior Great Books is a program that uses a variety of short stories developed by "The Great Books Foundation." MCPS is beginning a phased in implementation, starting in grades 3-5 this year, and moving to K-2 next year, barring budgetary constraints. Teachers are asked to include the program in their classroom curriculum.
The Great Books Foundation says, "The Junior Great Books program is a research-based K-12 reading program that provides a superb framework for teaching reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing, all in the context of students sharing their ideas about great literature."

At Burning Tree, students and teachers are greatly benefited by parent volunteers during discussion. We are hoping to offer training at Burning Tree and will let you know the cost. Training usually takes place from 4:30 to 7:30 on two consecutive evenings. Once trained, we would love that you could give us approximately two to three hours per month. The discussions are wonderful to facilitate as our children bring wonderful insights!
Haven't had the training, but are interested or have questions? Please contact Mrs. Richter at Marion_j_richter@mcpsmd.org . SIGN UP TO BE A VOLUNTEER THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
